Accelerating Work Impact
Three Critical Elements People, Teams and Organizations Need
By Ken Oehler, Ph.D.

“I have been working on a long term project over the course of four years, and I recently was able to compile and evaluate data from the entire project. It was very meaningful to be able to see that I had begun something important, stuck with it, and improved a part of the company in a way that reflects well on me and the others in my unit.”
The quote above is a response from research conducted by RADICL asking a random sample of U.S. workers to describe one of the most meaningful experiences of their career. We analyzed the five hundred responses we received to this question (using NLP) and found, contrary to conventional wisdom in the employee experience space, the top moments that matter are not about onboarding, performance management or HR service. Making a positive impact is the #1 work moment that matters to people. Stories about work impact entail team projects contributing to organizational success or positively helping customers in meaningful ways. Leaders clearly want work impact. And, it turns out, so do all workers.
The Work Impact Opportunity
Typical work impact is low.
In order to understand work impact opportunities, we examined four elements about individual and team outcomes: self-report productivity, being able to make meaningful progress on one’s work, high-quality, timely decisions, and cross functional (XFN) collaboration to get things done. Taken as independent aspects of work impact, just 3 out of 10 people say they have high output in each of these four areas. And only 9% have high levels in all of these aspects of work impact. In other RADICL research, we found that many employees are frustrated with their ability to have impact at work - and cite disorganization, conflicting priorities, senseless work, and incompetence as the major sources of their frustration. So, we set out to explore better ways to unlock and accelerate the work impact that employees and leaders alike are after.
